What is STD / STI Screening?

Depending on your sexual exposure and time from exposure, different STD / STI screening tests may be required or recommended.

Sexual exposure refers to any type of sexual contact e.g. oral, vaginal or anal intercourse with a high risk contact such as a commercial sex worker or people with risky sexual behaviour. Use of barrier protection methods such as condoms greatly reduces your risk but it is not 100%. There is always a risk whenever there is skin or mucosal contact with contaminated genital fluids or blood.

What are STD / STI Symptoms?
It is important to remember that the majority of STDs can be totally asymptomatic until the late stages of infection. An apparently healthy partner may still harbour an infection like HIV or Chlamydia. Even for experienced doctors, it is often not possible to determine if a person has been infected with an STD or not just by physical examination or appearance. Employing preventive strategies and going through screening tests if you have been at risk are the more reliable means of preventing and detecting infections.

The more popular ones include:
  • urethral ( urine tract ) or vaginal discharge
  • pain during urination
  • itch or pain in the urethra / vagina
  • Syphilis serology and titres
  • rash, sores or blisters on the penis / vagina
  • lumps or growths on the penis / vagina
  • pain, aching, swelling or heaviness in the testicles
  • HIV DNA PCR ( blood test - to be done on weekdays, before 11am. No fasting required. )
  • HIV RNA PCR ( blood test - to be done on weekdays, before 11am. No fasting required. )
  • More details on HIV testing can be found here.

Sometimes, there may be general symptoms such as fever, bodyaches, body rash, tiredness or swollen lymph glands over the neck or armpits.

Untreated, STDs may result in a wide range of complications, including subfertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic prostate irritation and inflammation ( prostatitis ), spinal cord and brain damage and even death.

Most STDs can be treated or controlled if discovered early.
